Monday morning, and our conversation keeps getting pushed back
Every Monday morning, I put off talking with someone close to me, and by the weekend I finally try to bring it up.
Scenes
- Monday morning, and our conversation gets put off again — “Let’s talk this weekend” rings again like a Monday morning alarm. Today, you both hurry out the door.
- You hear the same words, but imagine different timing — One person wants an answer right away that weekend; the other needs about a week to think. They both said, “Let’s talk.”
- The person waiting sees those words as a promise — Each weekend, the person waiting for an answer remembers those words as a promise. The one who put it off may think you can talk another time.
- First, decide when you’ll talk — Tonight, try writing a time to talk on the calendar. Make it a chance to hear each other’s hopes, not a day to decide the answer.
- There’s something to agree on before the answer — Even if you can’t reach an answer that day, you can decide when to talk again. Knowing when you’ll talk again can change the wait.
