When you wake up, you rewrite what you couldn’t say yesterday
This story is for anyone who wakes up thinking about the one thing they never managed to say in yesterday’s meeting.
Scenes
- When you wake up, you rewrite what you couldn’t say yesterday — The one thing you never managed to say in yesterday’s meeting comes to mind first thing in the morning. Are you rewriting it to say it better before you’ve even washed up?
- You even write out their reply in advance — As you decide in advance what the other person might say, does the one sentence you wanted to share get pushed aside? Sometimes wanting the conversation to go well can make your words come late.
- You delete the sentence in your notes for the third time — Sitting on the bed, you write down the words you swallowed in yesterday’s meeting. The longer the sentence about the work deadline gets, the more your finger returns to the delete button.
- When you try to prepare even for their reaction — The more you try to decide the other person’s reaction in advance, the longer your sentences become. Then the facts and the request get mixed together, and the words you actually need to say grow unclear.
- Write the facts and the request separately — Tonight, write just one line about what happened in yesterday’s meeting and one line about the change you want. In the morning, bring out those two lines before the explanation.
- Say it before you make it perfect — Even if you find yourself rewriting the sentence again in the morning, you don’t have to write the other person’s feelings for them. If the facts and the request are still there, your words have a place to begin again.
