I went to the celebration, but why did it take me so long to give my team credit?
Even when I know what a team member did well, I come back from the celebration having talked about everything but that.
Scenes
- I came to celebrate, but I couldn’t say it. — The day a team member finished their work well, I couldn’t bring myself to say “You did a great job” at the celebration.
- I said it was everyone’s achievement. — At the next meeting, the leader spoke only of the result as a team achievement. The work the team member had taken on and finished went by without their name.
- Name the shared work and each person’s part. — In leadership, it matters to say who took on what and saw it through, rather than praising only the result. That makes each person’s contribution clear.
- Write down one thing you noticed today. — Write one sentence about what your team member took on and finished today. When you see them next, you can share it with them.
- Give credit while the moment is fresh. — When you acknowledge good work the day you see it, you can share that team member’s contribution at the celebration too.
