Should I tell my family a secret?
After everyone in the house was asleep, the hexagram I’d laid out alone caught my eye first. I still didn’t have an answer to what might change if I said it.
Jimin is unsure whether to tell her family something she’s kept secret. In the sleeping house, she lays out the I Ching hexagram and, with Haewol, looks at the moment that secret might reach her family.
On a night when her family is asleep, Jimin seeks out Haewol to ask whether she should reveal a secret she’s kept for a long time. Haewol lays out the I Ching hexagram, but instead of reading her the outcome, he helps her look at whether she fears her family’s reaction or continuing to carry the secret alone. The secret itself is never revealed; only the choice of whether to speak remains.
When telling your family a secret
When you’re unsure whether to speak or keep it hidden, you can look at what might change along each path instead of asking which one is right.
What’s something you really want to tell your family but keep putting off?
There are nights when you pause for a long time just before speaking, wondering how your family will hear what you have to say. Today, we looked together at how revealing a secret and continuing to hide it each place a different burden on one person. If you’re holding something similar, you can tell that story slowly, too.
