When I set the dinner table, somehow I end up with more to do again.
We sit down to dinner as a family, but before I know it, clearing up and getting things ready for tomorrow have become my job too.
Scenes
- I get up, even while I’m eating. — After dinner, I’m always the first to get up, clear the table, and get tomorrow’s food ready.
- Once I’ve cleared up, I see tomorrow’s tasks too. — After clearing the table, I check the note about tomorrow’s side dishes and what the family needs to take care of, as if it were all my responsibility.
- Unassigned tasks keep landing on me. — When the family doesn’t decide who’ll handle each task, the person who notices and acts first keeps taking it on.
- Let’s name just one thing you did today. — Tonight, take a moment to notice one thing you took care of. Giving it a name can help you start to see where your share ends.
- I’ll notice it again next dinner. — Even after you notice, a task you’ve handled for a long time may come back to you. You can keep looking at what you’d like to share.
