Do I have to explain everything while getting ready for work?

This is a story for anyone who ends up answering someone’s questions every morning while putting off getting ready for work and planning the day.

Scenes

  • Do I have to explain everything while getting ready for work? — While changing clothes and packing your bag, you’re explaining your plans for the day from start to finish in response to someone close to you.
  • What if they pull away if I don’t answer? — It could be answered briefly, but the more you explain, the more rushed you feel. Drawing a line feels like rejecting them.
  • You start to put on your shoes, then turn back — You hear a question at the front door just before leaving for work and, still barefoot, explain your schedule all over again. The time you were getting ready quietly disappears.
  • Explaining yourself doesn’t prove closeness — Even with someone close, you don’t have to share every detail right away. The longer you explain, the easier it is to make it seem as though you need permission for your time and choices, too.
  • Leave it at one sentence — If someone asks tonight, try answering briefly, with only what you can say right now. Notice where your feelings pause when you stop explaining so much.
  • A relationship can continue even when you draw a line — It’s okay if it doesn’t feel comfortable right away. Next time, let’s see whether both the relationship and your day can remain intact even when you don’t explain everything.
