When I hear a compliment, I turn the calendar first
Even when someone says I did well, I find myself wondering why before I feel glad.
Scenes
- Even after hearing, “You did well” — As I turn to a new month, I think of my coworker’s compliment. Instead of feeling glad, I wonder if they really meant it.
- The calendar shows only dates — My coworker said I did well on last month’s work. Turning the calendar alone can’t tell me if that praise is true.
- I look for conditions behind the compliment — I may need proof before I can feel at ease believing a compliment. If I can’t think of any, I start doubting the praise too.
- I write down the words I’m checking — If I heard a compliment today, I can write the words down as they were, beside a date on the calendar. I don’t have to decide today if they’re true.
- Only the words from the compliment remain — Turning the calendar doesn’t change how I feel right away. Still, I can look at the compliment separately from the proof I’m waiting for.
