When the group chat pings, I open the handoff file first.
As I get ready to leave and put together the handoff, every group chat ping makes me add more to the list of things I’m responsible for.

- A new task comes with every ping. — When a new request comes through the group chat, it feels like another item I need to add to the handoff.
- Sort out what to finish and what to hand over. — A handoff is part of preparing for a job change; it doesn’t mean finishing everything that’s left. It means listing what you’ll complete and what the next person can carry on with.
- Choose a task for the next person to continue. — Today, pick one unfinished task from the file and write down what the next person can carry on with. It may help make the work clearer.
- You can’t sort it all out at once. — When another ping comes in, more work may get added. You can still sort out what to finish and what to hand over, and see what next line to add to the file.
